The planned closure will take place between Hebburn and South Shields from Monday August to Friday August 8.
The affected route will reopen to Metro services on Saturday August 9.
The works will see a total of 1,600 metres of new contact and catenary overhead wire installed, which is vital for the operation of the Metro system. The wires are where Metro trains draw high voltage power from.
The focus of the wire renewal is in the area between Bede and Tyne Dock.
This project forms part of the service’s Asset Renewal Programme – which involves the modernisation of key items of Metro infrastructure including tracks and overhead lines.
Buses will replace trains during the closure and provide a frequent service from South Shields Transport Interchange to Hebburn Metro station, calling at or near all Metro stations on the route.
Customers can connect with Metro services from Platform One at Hebburn Metro station, or from Heworth for onward journeys towards Newcastle and Sunderland.
Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: “There is no good time to close such large sections of line, but we need a five-day window to get these works completed safely, ensuring vital sections of the Metro system are renewed.
“In partnership with the Department for Transport (DfT), Nexus has been able to invest close to £1 billion in upgrading the Tyne and Wear Metro over the past 15 years. This includes the new train fleet and works to remove single-track operations in South Tyneside, together with hundreds of other projects to replace life expired assets and equipment.”
